The Authors Guide To Murder –
NOV 5, 2024
Beatriz Williams, Karen White, and Lauren Willig

When a hot-shot writer is found dead in his fancy gothic-esque castle, 3 female authors from the US venture to Scotland to visit the scene of the crime. The assigned detective is unamused by their American tendencies. While attempting to obtain statements from each of them, their involvement with the deceased and what brought them overseas, our detective begins to develop thickening suspicions that something is brewing beneath the surface of the situation. Three authors composed a story about three authors and apparently, it’s a satirical masterpiece. I’m pretty excited to get my hands on this one.\

The Murder Hypothesis* –
NOV 7, 2024
Sarah Wishart

This is a YA thriller.
In a fearless bought with a smart speaker in the new home she and her dad reside in, Grace – our MC – uncovers that the device is responsible for the accidental death of 4 other people. Her infatuation with chemistry and cat-killing level curiosity drive her further into her investigation, resulting in an experimental process to reveal the culprit behind the crimes. To me this read sounds like it’ll unfold similarly to if Lessons In Chemistry had a lovechild with anything from the Nancy Drew series. Both of those selections are books I’d pick up so it was a natural choice to throw this one on the November list.

The Sunflower House
NOV 12, 2024
Adriana Allegri

I’m not one to read a lot of varying historical fiction, but for some reason, the WWII books catch my attention more often than they don’t. This one is no exception. Hitler’s Germany houses our MC – Allina – through her struggles of heartbreak and survival. She’s thrown into the madness as a nurse, forced to tend to soon-to-be mothers housed within Hochland Home: a baby factory. With the promise of medicine and adoption services, this predatory facility attracted unmarried, pregnant women with the actual interest of adopting their children out to Nazi families. Allina bears witness to horrific conditions and child neglect all the while having to keep her own ancestry hidden in this heartwrenching narrative that captures an image of history unknown to too many people.

Written from the perspective of our favorite sidekick from The Wizard Of Oz, this rambunctious spinoff is something that I’ll be counting down the days for. It’s full of satire and references one of my favorite pieces art through and through. I’m excited to see where this pooch perspective takes us. Reading the blurb from bookshop.org tells me that once I pick this one up I’ll have to finish it before I put it back down.

The Jewel Of The Blues
NOV 19, 2024
Monica Chenault-Kilgore

The cover and synopsis of this book remind me of City Of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert.
The rise to stardom is unkind to Lucille in the 1920s jazz era in which her uphill battle is set. 15 minutes of fame is always worth all the hassle. Ruthless addictions and illicit affairs among she and her bandmates unveil an ensemble of secrets and horrors surrounding Lucille’s family. All signs point to her own father being responsible for a criminal act…. and possibly a murder.

The Last Hour Between Worlds

This is a tale of twists in reality and a bending of perception. I love the concept, I’m curious as to how well it’ll be executed. Our MC – Kembal – is off the clock at a party when people start dying on the spot. All signs point to her long-standing nemesis as the one responsible, but without warning, a new villain emerges and threatens the city. Venturing into the Deep Echoes brings us a darker side of the timeline and I’m ready to see what that darker side looks like. By the way, there’s a lot of hinting at the notion that this story is set in space. Is it space or is time-space? Is there a difference?

Darkly
NOV 26, 2024
Marisha Pessl

This is a YA novel.

A flatline MC, Dia, is chosen with 6 other teens to revamp a gaming franchise empire. She’s confused because she’s not someone who’s ever chosen for anything, let alone something so exclusive. There’s a lot of underlying themes here from all different directions. It feels like science fiction, it feels like horror, it feels very dystopian. Louisiana Veda, the woman who designed and built the game Darkly before she died is Dia’s idol. While Miss Veda has passed, I feel like Dia is going to be given a chance to get as close as she possibly can to ‘meeting her idol,’ and well, we all know how that usually goes.
